What a hellish day..and oh yeah, Merry Christmas

Dear God I'm glad this day is over. It has been one computer frustration after another. My parents got a new dell computer for Christmas and I was going to go over to hook it up for them. Before I left, I thought it would be handy to burn a few DVDs of all the music my dad has on my computer. It's 40GBs of .wav files he created from his old record collection. I'd rather do 10 DVDs than 60 CDs. But the thing is....I don't think I've ever used my DVD burner. I'm pretty sure I have one, but it just wouldn't work. On DVD+Rs I was getting a buffer overrun and it wouldn't even recognize DVD-Rs. So, that was the first frustration. Then I went to my parent's house for dinner and computer setup. The setup went smoothly and everything turned on ok, but at first it said the installed anti-virus had expired. I thought, hey no problem, we'll just get McAfee since I'm used to that software and know how to use it. Well, when I installed the McAfee firewall and virus scan, somehow that jump started the original virus scan that was on the computer and the two kept clashing. I tried uninstalling the original software, but it kept saying to close Outlook. Outlook WAS closed. Damnit! So, instead I ended up uninstalling McAfee virus scan and just kept the firewall. I'd really like to get that other software off there, but don't know what else to try. I think I'm going to have to hit up Matt & Mike for computer help, especially on my DVD burner. Argh.

I consciously did not use any real curse words in this post. As frustrated as I am right now, it just would have been f'n this and c**ks****r that, and no one needs that at the holidays.

Merry Christmas!

Just call me Betty Crocker

I am exhausted. Today I made 8 batches of cookies in 5 1/2 hours. Ugh. Yes, I know it's early, but really, Christmas is in two weeks, and I didn't want to give them out when everyone else was giving food out too. I made some plates up and gave them out to all my wonderful neighbors. I really lucked out with my neighborhood - love 'em all. I'm also bringing some in to work tomorrow, and will give others out to random friends. I usually make extra in case a batch comes out bad, but this year everything came out ok. This was also the first year I made my Aunt Mary Ann's lemon cookies. They're really easy and taste great. I like mixing up the cookie selection so it's not all the same type. Here's what's in the picture from left top, down and over on the middle plate:
-Heath Toffee Cookies
-Tollhouse Choc Chip Cookies
-Oatmean Mini Choc Chip (really don't like this recipe...need to find a diff oatmeal one)
-Mom's Chocolate Pudding Choc Chip Cookies (my favorite)
-Peanut Butter Choc Chip Cookies (new recipe, need to make them smaller next year)
-Aunt Mary Ann's Lemon Cookies
-Reese's PB Cup Bar Cookies
-Fudge Bar Cookies (new recipe, cooked a little too long...it's too hard to bake bar cookies! They're either too cooked or not cooked enough)
Hey...I just reread my cookie post from last year and realized...I didn't injure myself yet this holiday season! Ok, yes, I did cut my thumb on Thanksgiving, but it wasn't as serious as what I usually do. So, go me! Woo Hoo! No band-aids, burn ointment, or stitches for me! Now I just have to get through the actual Christmas day cooking....but I think my sister and her husband are doing most of that.

Cowboy Black-Tie

Once again, I must say that I love Texas. Tonight was a charity event at the Dell Diamond (baseball stadium) that some of my north doctors wanted to help sponsor. We purchased a table for 10, but a few days before the event, a couple of the docs couldn't go, leaving four empty seats. The docs asked if the two front desk girls wanted to go, and they said sure. One brought her daughter, and the other one asked me to be her date. At first we heard it was 'cocktail' attire. Then...we heard 'Cowboy Black-Tie'. huh? I called one of the hospital staff that had gone last year, and she said Cowboy Black Tie is tuxedo shirt, jacket, and tie....and then blue jeans, cowboy boots, and cowboy hat. Awesome! So, yes, it's kinda black-tie, but not really. Originally I had planned on wearing a short skirt and top that were cute, but today we heard the words 'outside', 'tent' and '45 degree weather'. So, luckily I remembered I had a nice ankle length dress that hides all my tattoos, and would work for black tie but was slightly warmer than my original plan. I stayed for a couple hours, and it was fun. There were several guys in cowboy blacktie, quite a few full on tuxes, mostly just suits. The women were really decked out - saw several fur coats. The best part? There was a silent auction, and one of the items was a 2-month-old purebred German Short Hair Pointer (a hunting dog). You'd never see that in California! I hunting dog as an auction item! Love it. People really take their hunting seriously out here.

Christmas Came Early

Hey y'all. Sorry it's been such a dry spell of posts. Just the usual happening lately. Hmm...some updates....I'm very excited that it looks like my friend Andrea from CA will be visiting in Feb. She hasn't been out to Austin yet, and I'm so looking forward to it. She's an old high school friend that's now an architect in the bay area. We always joked that she'd design my house for me, but that didn't quite work out, since my house was built in '79. ...... I watched Thank You for Smoking at Mike & Annette's house and I really liked it. I didn't know what to expect, but it's all about a lobbyist for the tobacco industry, and it was funny! We laughed quite a bit, and at the end realized that I don't think you ever see anyone actually smoking. Check it out. Good movie. ..... Yesterday Matt and I went to the Annual Gem and Rock show. I went last year cause I'm fiddling with the idea of making a coffee table and putting pretty slabs of agate/quartz/whatever on the top. I had purchased some stones last year and never worked on it. I bought some more this time and now I have enough to make the actual table and have a few left over to test out how I'm going to set the stones. Don't know when I'll get around to it, but hopefully within the next year. After that we went to a car show. I'd never been to one, and it was really cool. It was at the Austin Convention Center and all the big auto makers had their new models out. We were there pretty late so it wasn't too busy. We were able to check out and sit in everything without feeling rushed. Matt's looking into getting a new convertible, so we focused on those. We checked out a bunch, and it's amazing the design decisions some companies have made. There were some really stupid ideas with cup holder placements, glove box sizes, and back seat configurations. Luckily, I didn't see anything that was calling out to me to buy it. I'm happy with my Corolla. I did check out the new model to see what they changed. Strangely, everything was the same as my car (a 2003) except for one feature that I really like - the odometer, speedometer, gas gage area (what is that called?) on mine has a white background with dark green numbering. So, at night it's all lit up and it makes driving at night a little safer because it's a light in your face, instead of being all dark, like most displays. But, it looks like in the new model they went back to dark background with white numbering. With the amount of night driving I do, and all the long-distance driving I do, I really love my white display. I think it's a great safety feature and don't understand why they would change it. Glad I bought my car when I did!

Anyways, about the post title: I finally put up a Christmas tree this year. I have a ton of panda ornaments (cause, you know, I've collected pandas since I was 5) and I bought a fake tree last year, but was too worried about the cats. This year, I'm thinking hell with it, if they knock it down, oh well. Here's a pic. This actually isn't all my ornaments. I didn't put out about 15 of my most delicate glass/ceramic ones, just in case the cats do get into it. It's damn hard finding panda bear Christmas ornaments! Damn teddy bears take over everything!

My favorite ornaments are those that have a panda bear instead of the usual teddy bear. For example, these two below of the firefighter panda and the toy box.

Another happy event was I received some artwork that I'd commissioned over a year ago. There's an artist whose website I found years ago and really liked her style of drawing women. I was fiddling with the idea of a drawing of a fairy reading a sci-fi book..you know..mixing sci fi with fantasy. At first I was thinking about it as a tattoo, but knew it would have to be too big to see all the detail. It would've had to be a back piece or really big on my leg or something. I've realized that I don't want any more tattoos on my back cause I'd rather be able to see them, and I just wasn't really 'feeling' it as a leg tattoo. So, instead I thought it would just be cute and whimsical as a framed piece. I gave her my idea and preferred colors, but she came up with the majority of the final rendering. She sent me both the original graphite drawing and the version she colored in photoshop. I really wish I had some artistic talent. I love how these came out. If you click on the picture it comes up bigger and you can really see the detail.
Here is her website.
