Meat! Meat! Meat!

I’m actually impressed how quickly I got responses on my last post. I guess you guys really are checking this! Again, sorry about the long absence. I haven’t been spending much time on my home computer.

So, here’s some interesting stuff that happened:

The Alamo Drafthouse movie theater moved its Downtown location to a new building and they just finished renovating it. The owners decided to do a ‘quote along’ for Blazing Saddles. And, instead of just showing the movie, they decided to do a road trip for BBQ. They rented a party bus, filled it with 35 loyal patrons (including me, Michael (calling him MB now is just ridiculous since most of have you met him), and two of his friends John and Jessica) and we drove from 11:30 to 6:30 around Central Texas just to eat BBQ. Awesome. We went to four different places, all of which I’d never been to. They passed out these shirts that we all had to wear. It’s amazing how just wearing the same shirt builds such cult-like feelings (Meat! Meat! Meat!)

Tim, the owner of the Drafthouse was so excited about the BBQ, he wore his special Adidas BBQ shoes. So cute.

…anyways….the first place was Smitty’s in Lockhart. Lockhart is called the birthplace of Texas BBQ. There’s a family feud between Smitty’s and Kreuz’s…something about the dad dying and leaving the building to the son and the recipes and business to the daughter. So the daughter kicked out her brother and started her own BBQ place called Smitty’s….something like that. People take it very seriously if you’re a Kreuz’s fan vs a Smitty’s fan. Eh, I like both. One of the down-home kinda things is that all you get is butcher paper and a knife. There are no forks. You just eat everything with your hands! There’s also no BBQ sauce. It’s called dry BBQ. Kreuz’s is like that too. Makes it easier to eat with your hands. Oh, and of course there was the required white bread. Wheat bread just doesn’t cut it! The white bread gets all mushed into the brisket and it’s soooo good We were allocated ¼ lb of BBQ each, but basically anyone could go back for seconds as long as the food held out. We had prime rib, brisket, and lean brisket. I didn’t care for the sausage at all. I’m a real wimp when it comes to sausage. All the places we went to had really coarsely ground sausage and the texture just made me want to throw up. I’ll stick with the sausage at Rudy’s (the worst BBQ in TX! Hee hee).

After Smitty’s we went to Luling City Market. It was only a 20 minute drive, and by the time we got there everyone was still full from Smitty’s. The place was packed and they hadn’t set aside any room for us. I could tell Tim (the owner of the Drafthouse) was pissed about it, but we ended up sitting by the train tracks and eating on a load of discarded rail ties. I only had a couple bites. It wasn’t that good, and I was trying to save room for the next two places.

After Luling we drove to Gonzalez, about another 20 minutes. The owner greeted us and set us up at private tables. He was so happy to see us! He invited small groups to the back to see the fire pit and smoker. It smelled so delicious back there. The walls were completely black from years of BBQ smoke. I really liked it. We didn’t get any side dishes with the meat, but as we were walking out I looked at the main restaurant area and they had some yummy sides. We are definitely going back.
Oh, and the 'Come & Take It' is a reference to a battle in Gonzales in 1835. Something about us getting a cannon from Mexico and deciding we'd like to keep it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Come_and_take_it) Ah, those rascally Texans.

And last, but not least, was back to Lockhart for Black’s. We were supposed to go somewhere in Buda, but it closed down. I think Black’s was my favorite. We got pork tenderloin, brisket, and sausage. I really liked the pork and the brisket. By that point I really needed something non-meat so I asked for some potato salad and they didn’t even charge me for it. Nice people.
Lots of meat!
After all that meat was the drive back to the new Alamo downtown location. Everyone on the bus was friendly and chatty (did I mention the two kegs of beer in the back? Luckily before we left I asked if there was any water on the bus and they grabbed two buckets of bottled water before we left). I think my colon was in shock from all that meat.

When we got back to the Drafthouse they had reserved seats for us so we could all sit together. We got some strange looks at the t-shirts. They handed out cap guns and whoopee cushions to use at the appropriate points in the movie. The cap gun was cool! I didn’t use up all the caps, so I’ve got em saved for next Halloween or something. Never know when you’ll need a fake gun for a costume. I realized I had never seen Blazing Saddles all the way through. It was funny, but not my favorite Mel Brooks movie (Spaceballs!). We were pretty full, but I wanted dessert. Michael and I split an order of their just-made chocolate cookies and their molten chocolate cake. I’m usually pretty picky about chocolate cake at restaurants cause it’s usually too dry, but damn that was some awesome dessert. We got out around 9pm and Michael and I both agreed that for the 10 hours we were together, we got along quite well. Oh, and uh, here’s a picture of us on the bus. He’s a photographer on the side so he hates having his picture taken. I on the otherhand am a picture whore and am really good at the one-arm raised photo. So, yes, I took this. I think we look cute.

Movie Reviews:
Transformers: Sucked Ass. The special effects were INCREDIBLE but the story was really slow and the character that was supposed to be annoying was SO annoying I just wanted to rip his face off. So glad I didn’t pay for that in the theater.

Ratatouille: Pixar movie about a French rat that wants to be a chef. We saw this as ANK Movie Night last week and about 12 people were there. We ALL loved it. Pixar does such quality work. The pacing was good, characters were funny, lots of physical and verbal humor. I really really enjoyed it. Not just a kid’s movie!
